Overview
This 5 Days / 4 Nights journey offers travelers a rare opportunity to experience two contrasting yet complementary sides of Somalia—Hargeisa and Mogadishu—each shaped by a distinct colonial legacy that continues to influence architecture, culture, and daily life.
The journey begins in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, formerly part of British Somaliland. Known for its calm atmosphere and strong cultural identity, the city offers an authentic introduction to Somali heritage. Guests explore the remarkable Laas Geel rock shelters, home to some of Africa’s most important Neolithic cave paintings dating back over 5,000 years. Visits to traditional camel markets, local cafés, and street scenes reveal a way of life deeply rooted in tradition and community.
The tour then continues to Mogadishu, Somalia’s historic coastal capital, formerly part of Italian Somaliland, where European influence blends with Somali and Indian Ocean cultures. Travelers visit key landmarks such as the Hawo Tako Statue, and historic districts reflecting this layered past. A drive through the Bakara Market area, linked to the Black Hawk Down incident, provides historical context to events that shaped modern Mogadishu, presented respectfully and informatively.
Lido Beach shows another side of the city, where golden sands, clear waters, and lively seaside cafés showcase the city’s vibrant social life. Bustling markets and oceanfront restaurants highlight the energy and flavors of contemporary Mogadishu.
Together, Hargeisa and Mogadishu—one shaped by British administration and the other by Italian rule—offer travelers a deeper understanding of Somalia’s diversity, resilience, and enduring spirit in one compelling and professionally guided journey.
This 5 Days / 4 Nights tour introduces travelers to two of Somalia’s key destinations— Hargeisa and Mogadishu. Don’t miss the Hargeisa Cultural Centre for a taste of local art and history. Overnight at Damal Hotel or similar.
After breakfast, depart Hargeisa for Laas Geel to explore its impressive Neolithic rock art. The vibrant, well-preserved paintings are estimated to be around 5,000 years old. Along the way, stop to visit local nomadic families, offering a rare glimpse into traditional Somali pastoral life.
Continue to Berbera and visit the historic Ottoman Mosque and traditional Ottoman houses, where you will enjoy a late lunch. Tour Berbera’s old town, renowned for its Ottoman, Persian, and British architecture, and then visit the city’s pristine beaches. Relax, swim, or enjoy the sunset by the sea.
Return to Hargeisa in the evening. Overnight at Damal Hotel or similar.
Breakfast, pack up, and transfer to Egal International Airport. Take a short flight from Hargeisa to Mogadishu. Upon arrival at Aden Adde International Airport, receive immigration assistance and transfer to your hotel. Enjoy lunch at the hotel or outside restaurant, followed by a detailed tour briefing.
In the afternoon, drive along Makka Almukarama Road, one of Mogadishu’s main commercial streets, and see the Arco di Trionfo, as well as the statue of Ahmed Gurey, the freedom hero. Head to Lido Beach for a relaxing boat ride along the Indian Ocean. Then visit Mogadishu Mall, one of the largest malls in Hamarweyne, and explore its various shops. Afterward, relax at a rooftop café with panoramic views of Mogadishu Cathedral, the historic Arch of Umberto I, and Arba’a Rukun Mosque in the medieval Shangani District. The area is associated with the events portrayed in the Hollywood movie Black Hawk Down. We will drive through the streets of Bakara Market. Please do not expect to walk inside Bakara Market freely, as movement of tourists is very restricted. Explore money exchange stalls, then pay respects at the 14 October 2017 Explosion Memorial Tower.
Visit camel camps, home to the largest camel population, and enjoy a traditional camel meat lunch with rice or spaghetti (not for vegetarians).
In the afternoon, you can go to Jazeera Salty Lake to see flamingos, then relax at Abaydhaxan Beach Resort with Somali tea, popcorn with dates, and a shoreline walk. End the day at Nimow Sand Dune before returning to your hotel in Mogadishu for an overnight stay.
